The University of Georgia
Welcome to my web page. I have designed this site in conjunction with my work towards my M.Ed. at UGA in Instructional Technology. More specifically, I am part of the School Library Media program of study. You can use this site to navigate through my course work and learn about my preparation to become a media specialist.
Vision and Philosophy
My high school students often hear me say, “Your education is your freedom.” This strikes at the very core of their desire for independence, which is perhaps their greatest want as teenagers on the verge of adulthood. It also strikes at the core of what I believe and why I was destined for a career in this field. Nothing offers individuals more independence, power or opportunity than education. Thus, my vision and philosophy as an educator, be it in the classroom, media center or anywhere, is to impart this truth to students...to offer them a world of opportunity by offering them authentic learning opportunities that contribute to the process of making them lifelong learners.
Program Goals
As a teacher who wishes to continually grow professionally, I began investigating graduate programs after my first year of teaching. Not sure of my future goals in the field of education, I began the masters program for Secondary English Teachers at North Georgia College and State University. Since then, I have realized my goals and discovered that The University of Georgia offers a program that better suits my professional goals through the Instructional Technology School Library Media track.
My primary reason for entering the field of education was the opportunity it afforded me to impact the lives and learning experiences of young people. That goal has not changed. I simply hope to refine my practice and methods by pursuing a degree in School Library Media. Providing students with resources and teaching them how to access knowledge from various forms of media is essential in today’s society. Thus, my goal to become a knowledgeable and successful media specialist is directly related to my initial purpose to better the learning experiences of students.
Not only do I wish to become knowledgeable in making resources available to students, but to teachers as well. Through working toward a master’s degree in School Library Media, I hope to become proficient in addressing instructional problems within the school setting. By gaining a fluent understanding of organizing, applying, and training others to use valid resources, I will be able to impact student learning by aiding educators in using various instructional tools to get information across to students.
In order to reach these goals, an increased awareness of school curriculum in subject areas other than my own is essential. Thus, another objective in seeking the SLM Degree is to become familiar with the process of developing curriculum for all subject areas. It is also imperative that I expand my knowledge of how students internalize information as I aspire to better the methods of instruction they encounter.
Overall, student learning is the point of all aspects of education. My goal to become a media specialist is directly related to this purpose; I desire to pursue a degree that will equip me to improve instruction in my school and use the knowledge I gain to lead fellow educators in making the learning experiences of our students as effective as possible.
