...GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Our Mission Statement IS a way of life for us, as are our Staff Creed and Staff Goals. We may be crazy, but our staff is committed to our Vision to become the most effective provider in the country of educational services to at-risk students. Adequate facilities and funding for our basic and supplemental programs are our biggest challenges.

Our students are encouraged to think about, talk about, memorize, wear, and internalize the Student Creed! During each of our 8 terms, students are exposed to ‘Term Themes’, which tie in to the 8 character components of the Creed.

...SMALL CARING SCHOOLS WITH SMALL CLASS SIZES
Like a throwback to an earlier time in America, part of Summit’s success is the personal nature of our classrooms and schools. Everyone knows everyone and there’s no slipping between the cracks. The faculty works together closely. Individual needs are met. Students, who have lived with rejection, now feel love and acceptance. When we talk about the “Summit Family” it really means something.

...EXTRA TIME IN CLASS AND EXTRA HELP
Students at Summit High attend school longer each day than students in traditional schools. All students attend a mandatory 5th period. Additionally, an optional after-school 6th period is offered twice a week for extra help with course work, testing preparation, or credit recovery.

…STUDENT ACADEMIC PROGRESS
Long before NCLB or State mandates we began tracking student progress in specific areas such as reading and math gain, attendance, credit earned, and more. Our ‘Benchmarks of Student Progress’ is a challenge we give to ourselves. Summit High offers 45 extra minutes of instruction during the school day (5 periods) as well as an after school period (6th period) and evening activities. Considering the population we serve, graduation rates from Summit High and mentored students throughout the district are amazingly high. We seek to constantly improve student outcomes.

…SUMMIT SCHOLARSHIPS
We believe that every student should continue his or her education after high school. Whether it’s a college, university, or technical school, we help pay for continued training with a Summit Scholarship. Every student qualifies if they simply pass all of their classes. They need not graduate from Summit. Attendance for as little as one quarter between 7th and 12th grades qualifies them for a scholarship. Scholarships currently range from $400 to $3,500, spread over 8 semesters. The scholarships are funded by generous donations from the faculty and community patrons.

…LIFELONG READERS CLUB
Mark Twain was right when he said, “Those who do not read have no advantage over those who can not read.” One method that Summit uses to improve reading skills and gain knowledge is the Lifelong Readers Club. Students are assigned carefully selected books at an appropriate reading level to read outside of school. Completion of two books gets a student in the Club and they receive a reading t-shirt. Incentives are also offered at the 4, 6, and 8-book level. This program is funded by grants and donations.

…PEAK PERFORMANCE TEAM & STUDENT RECOGNITION
Students are encouraged to learn the Summit Student Creed and put it into action in their life. By doing so they can join the PEAK Performance Team. Students who achieve academically or make academic improvement are also honored throughout the year and at commencement. Additionally, each year several students who have overcome significant obstacles in their life receive “The Summit Award.” The Graduation and Award Ceremony at the end of the school year is inspiring for all in attendance as students are honored.

…HEALTHY LIFESTYLE/NEW EXPOSURE PROGRAM
Many teens are at-risk for dropping out, substance abuse, and other pitfalls because of a lack of experience with positive, healthy lifestyle choices. This can be especially true for Summit students. But here, students can begin to get the “Full View of Life” by experiencing some healthy new alternatives, such as:

-Arts, including famous Broadway plays such as Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera, exciting performances like Peking Acrobats and BLAST! They can hear the Utah Symphony, try a ballet, visit a museum, see performers like Bill Cosby and David Copperfield, or attend other arts events.

-Sports: Never been to a college or pro game? No problem at Summit. Students can try out the Utes, Cougars, Jazz, or others. They can also learn racquetball, tennis, and other sports by playing with the faculty after school.

-Clear Creek Personal Development Camps can help students learn teamwork, communication, and other personal development skills in a beautiful mountain setting. It’s also a great place to learn some history and science. Because of its impact on the lives of students, Summit’s Clear Creek program has received attention from and has been used for training by a number of Utah colleges and universities as well as other public schools and helping professionals.

-College is not on their agenda when most students enroll at Summit. However, our unique partnerships with some Utah colleges changes that. Summit students spend full days on a college campus including classes and interaction with professors and college students. College students also participate in Healthy Lifestyle/New Exposure and other activities at Summit. For some students this interaction is their first real exposure to college. It gives them information and the courage to try something that was unfamiliar before. Summit also works closely with Snow College, College of Eastern Utah, UVSC, Mountainlands Applied Technology College, and other institutions of higher education.

-Fun: During the year students also have the chance to participate in a Talent Show or our crazy Creed Olympics, the Spring Carnival, or an elegant etiquette dinner.

…HALLWAY MUSEUM
Summit High School hallways exhibit Fine Art (paintings, photo’s, a kinetic sculpture), a History Timeline, Geography display, and plasma screens showing student work, current events, and other information.

…DOUG’S DEAD POETS SOCIETY
While at-risk students may not seem likely to be fond of poetry, for nearly 20 years students at Summit have been reading, writing, and memorizing poetry. They discuss and recite poetry during class breaks and lunch, on buses to activities, and on their own time. They learn life lessons from poetry. For example, hundreds of Summit students have looked at their own behavior as they memorized these words from Shakespeare…

What win, if I gain the thing I seek?
A dream, a breath, a froth of fleeting joy.
Who buys a minute’s mirth to wail a week?
Or sells eternity to get a toy?

…GOING THE EXTRA MILE
Perhaps we’re most unique because of the extra’s we do that aren’t required by the School District, the State, or the Federal Government. Our faculty developed all of the principles and programs listed here. None are required. The staff puts in many extra hours running the programs and raising the money to fund the programs. Nearly $400,000 in supplemental funding has been raised in the past 7 years alone.

Our logo is a Rock Climber, representing our mascot, a Mountaineer.
