Internet for Seniors - Basic Interesting Web Site for Newbies
This is a list of some interesting Web sites that may be of help in “learning” the Internet. The list includes those which were included in the list handed out at the October 17 class session. It also includes some “mouse practice” site, which I encourage you to try. Please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or by telephone (230-1215) if you have any difficulty in opening a Web page using the links on the list. To the extent possible, I have tried to double-check each Web address and make sure it works. By the way, this Web page will be available for a limited time. You may wish to print it for future reference.

Mouse Practice

First, I recommend that, if you are having any difficulty using the mouse, either moving the mouse or clicking the mouse button, you use the following Internet links to practice your mouse technique.

http://www.photonbook.com/

http://www.ckls.org/~crippel/computerlab/tutorials/mouse/page1.html

Another excellent mouse practice is game playing. Here are a few sites where, if the computer you are using has the appropriate software, you can have fun and practice with the mouse.

This is an Australian site with several Internet tips from which you can choose. http://www.seniors.gov.au/internet/seniors/publishing.nsf/Content/Internet+tools+and+tips

For those using the Windows operating system on a PC, this site in quite helpful, although some items are well beyond what a Web beginner might use. Find the Web basics links on the left side of the page. http://www.webteacher.org/windows.html

Same as the preceding site, but for a person with an Apple Macintosh computer:

Email Assistance

For the purpose of this list of assistance with email, the Yahoo! Mail program will be used. If you become familiar with the Yahoo! Mail program, you will be able to any other Internet-based email programs, e.g.,

Hotmail from Microsoft:

Note that GMail is available by invitation only. (If you would rather use GMail than Yahoo, contact me.)

LycosMail from Lycos:

The Yahoo! Mail program is quite easy to understand and use, but these next few Web sites will provide some help in getting started.

Go to this site for a list of topics about using Yahoo mail.

While you are there, select a topic under “Using my Yahoo! Mail Account.” These topics contain all you need, and if they don’t call me for assistance. One that you should read is
