External Article:
The Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH)
recently announced that Assemblies of God National Representative
for Deaf Culture Kevin M. Babin was selected to receive the
prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

The annual award, to be presented during the Missouri Interpreters
Conference this Saturday, September 29, in Columbia, is to honor
individuals who have "demonstrated outstanding service to deaf and
hard of hearing Missourians over a significant portion of their
lifetime."

Babin, who was asked to present a legal interpreting workshop in
conjunction with the Missouri Supreme Court administration at the
conference, expressed his appreciation, saying, "I feel very honored
to be considered and selected for such a prestigious award."

Through the years, Babin's work with the deaf has been far reaching.
From work done locally through his church in Springfield and his
instruction at local universities to his work accomplished through
his position at the AG national headquarters, his role in state and
national deaf activities, and through the demand for his presence as
a guest or presenter in other parts of the world.

"This award is but a small token of appreciation for your many years
of working for the benefit of Missourians who are deaf and hard of
hearing," stated Roy Miller, executive director of MCDHH, in a
letter to Babin. "...Congratulations to a most deserving award
recipient."

Babin is quick to deflect the praise. "I'm a "turtle on a post [he
didn't get there by himself] . . . . and if it wasn't for Jesus in
my life, I wouldn't be here - I would not even be working with deaf
people."

However, Babin is no stranger to honors. Having been chosen as the
Hearing Evaluator of the Year in 2002 and to chair the Missouri
Commission for the Deaf for four years (1994-98), he also is
frequently chosen to be the interpreter during presidential visits
to the state.

"If I'm given the opportunity, I want to personally thank God right
there [at the conference], to glorify Him, in a way that will
positively impact the hearts and minds of a mostly secular group of
people."

For more information about the MCDHH, see its Web site at
http://www.mcdhh.mo.gov/.
