Starting from the ground up

It’s 9:30 p.m. as I write this.  Part of our work team is in the air right now on the way back to Vancouver.  The rest of the work team will depart Da Nang on Monday to begin the trip home.  I will remain until Nov. 29 and arrive in Vancouver on the 30th.

The photo above shows one of the houses we started on the first day of our assessment work.  We gave this woman four hundred dollars cash to purchase bricks and begin to construct the walls to her home. Almost all of her walls had been destroyed by the storm.  We stopped by yesterday to see how far she had gotten with her reconstruction.  This was the first house we decided to give cash money to.  By doing that we made the decision not to do her roof, but to help her with her walls because her situation was so desperate.  We were very pleased to find that she and her community of friends had all rallied together to get most of the walls completed.  She then told us that she had been given damaged medal roofing to temporally cover her reconstructed home.
All of us were so moved by the effort everyone had made that we all pulled together to come up with enough money to purchase “new” medal roofing for her.  It was the right thing to do.  She was so happy and gave us the smile of a life time.

This is the lady when we gave her the money for the reconstruction of her walls.  The young woman giving her the money is our translator Quin.  She is also the lady who was giving her the damaged medal roofing for her temporary roofing needs.  Quin’s house was also completely destroyed during the storm.  They both live in the same village and both suffered severely from the storm, but were helping each other as best they could with the limited materials and money they had.

Jesus on a hill side told his followers that they were not to do acts of kindness to be seen by men.  Our purpose is not to brag or boast about our accomplishments, but to share the goodness of God that has been given to the poor who suffered the most due to the typhoon.  We are thankful that we are able to be doing what we can, to help those God has placed in our path.

Still doing what we can for a few more days...
