A. Fine Blog

Sean Stannard Stockton organized a blog Carnival (an organized swarm) around the Gates issue.  The inaugural edition can be found on his site here.

Good groups of posts here, of particular interest is a fine op-ed written by Jed Emerson and Mark Kramer on “typical” philanthropic investment policy and an appeal for a fresh look at the financial investments of foundations.

So, what has the Gates Foundation done while all this is happening.  Well, announced a new hire to run their special initiatives (article here) by poaching the senior staff person from a grantee organization.  This is an unthinkably bad practice on part of foundations.  How could they do any more harm to their grantees than hiring away the best talent in the organizations?

And they announced a $11.5 million initiative to continue to help wire libraries. (here)

In other words, apple pie and business as usual from the world’s largest foundation that will continue to invest in polluting the world and developing drugs that are too expensive for most people in the world.
