The Pink Ribbon Socks

Okay, so I’m a little later than expected, it’s been a busy month. These are the socks I alluded to in my last entry, but didn’t say too much about because they hadn’t been presented just yet.....

My cubicle neighbor at work gets cold. She has a portable heater, but every time too many of them are on at the same time, it blows a fuse for the whole row of cubicles and has to be reset. After the last time, I jokingly said I should knit her some socks to accompany the blanket she jokingly said she’d be bringing in. Turns out, both of us were only half-joking.

Right about that same time, her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Around then, it may have been the same day, but I think it was a day or two later, I was (sheerly by coincidence) flipping through my pattern book, and I came across this pattern for Pink Ribbon Socks, I emailed Sheri at The Loopy Ewe, and ordered some pink sock yarn, enough to make a pair each for my cubicle neighbor AND her mom. After I received it, I set to work.

I got both pairs done in almost record time. One pair was done the night before her mom’s mastectomy and one was done the day of. My friend took the day off from work, but I was able to present her with her very own pair the next day when she came back.

It made me feel good that I could help in some way. I may not have a lot of time or money that I can give, and I certainly can’t cure the cancer, but I was able to help keep her mom’s feet that much warmer during her stay in the hospital, and I hope that the socks will accompany her through every phase of her treatment and remission and remind her that there are people everywhere (even people she hasn’t met yet) praying for her recovery..
