This course, listed as ENGL 444/544 in the course catalog, is a two-week intensive course in Ireland that culminates in online discussions and a final research paper once we return to the States.
This course couples some of the greatest works of Irish literature from the medieval period through modern day, with onsite instruction in Ireland. We will examine the works of Joyce, Yeats, Deane, Heaney, and Beckett while exploring the misty shores of the Lake Isle of Innisfree and the craggy cliffs of Inis Mór. We will follow the footsteps of literary giants in Dublin, and walk on the hills of kings in Tara. We shall visit the Book of Kells and the hallowed halls of Trinity College, Dublin and venture into the historical past of Kilmainham Gaol. From Glendalough to Kilkenny, from Galway to Armagh, we will immerse ourselves in the literary culture of one of the world’s most influential civilizations.
Admission is open to any Longwood student, undergraduate or graduate, and enrollment continues until Feb. 1, 2008.
Program costs include roundtrip airfare from Dulles Airport to Dublin, hotel accommodation and breakfasts, all admission costs to sites and museums, private bus transport outside of Dublin, ferry to Inis Mór, and private guide in addition to the program director.
