8 Kent was a large one family house when built.  Back in the 60’s Newburyport wasn’t

the wealthy town that it is today.  When the economy was down the larger houses were converted into multiple apartments.  When 8 Kent was divided, it was a hack job. And a lot of ornate entry details were lost in the process.  After restoring the entire exterior the search was on for a suitable entry door that could restore the houses sense of style. I eventually found a period victorian door that fit the front hallway perfectly.  It really looks like it had been there all along.

We assumed the doors were mahogany before we had stripped them, but they turned out to be black walnut.   I had already got Jeff Briggs started on a set massive mahogany jambs with an oak threshold.  As it turns out all three materials ended up working together nicely.  These doors are huge, together they are 66 inches wide and just over 9 feet high.  The finish trim and gold leaf number eight was done by my friend Doug Bechler.  Balwin hardware rounds out the package.  This was an extremely expensive and time consuming project but totally worth it.   This was probably the most satisfying projects I have done at Kent Street
