West Paris and Grafton Notch
West Paris and Grafton Notch
Spent a really nice relaxing weekend in West Paris. Good wine, awesome meals and great conversation punctuated a couple of great days of winter fun. Saturday was my first time in Grafton Notch State Park. As we drove to the trailhead you could feel the wind howling southbound down through the notch. Some of the flats had been wind stripped of snow and we started zipping up our layers before we even got out of the car.
Unlike here in MA, the snow up north is still powdery and deep, it was a definite snowshoe day. Once in the woods, the wind tapered off and we had a great hike up the AT to table rock. From the view point on top of table rock the wind was still very apparent. The clouds were flying by Old Speck mountain on the other side of the notch. We turned our backs to the wind and had a quick lunch.
Sunday was a quick snowshoe up Berry’s Ledge in West Paris. This is about a 400’ elevation gain and makes for a nice quick hike out the back door. We brought sleds with us and got a free ride to the bottom. You can’t deny the effort to fun ratio of carrying a 2 pound plastic sled with you as you climb a snowy hill.
