Oarfish found in Catalina

Rare Oarfish
On August 16, 2006 an incredible event happened in Big Fisherman Cove at the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island. A rare Oarfish was found swimming in the shallow harbor by the boat docks. The longest of all bony fishes, this rarely seen fish is normally found in open ocean waters, but occasionally drifts into shallow areas when sick or dying. Scientists (including this one!), visitors, as wells as middle and high school students participating in summer programs at WMSC, had the unique opportunity to swim with this majestic fish before it eventually died in the cove. The fish was then brought on shore, wrapped in plastic and frozen overnight before being sent to the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum, where it will be preserved and put on display for the public (small tissue samples will also be used for genetic studies to help understand the relation of this fish to other bony fish).
