Pledge of Allegiance

I am not out to change or take away the pledge of allegiance, but I can understand the logic of doing so. Forget about "under God"- why do we have a pledge at all? Part of the strength of the flag as a symbol is that we honor it voluntarily. Besides tradition-why round up school kids to recite a pledge to a government symbol? Maybe the children shouldn’t be taking an oath of office.

The politicians who run the government would love us to pledge allegiance to variable levels of personal integrity, “Love it or Leave it” false choices, missing laptop computers loaded with personal information, the botched Hurricane Katrina response, failed 911 defenses, and, 6 years after 911- ineffective airport, seaport and border security.

More to pledge to:

Military prison mismanagement- We have security cameras in our mini marts and casinos, but none in place to prevent international incidents inside our military prisons, or to counter the idea that people at the top had no clue what was going on. Top level people retire, troops go to jail.

Jane Fonda says a 4 letter word on network TV- people are upset- a boob is flashed at the Super Bowl half-time show- government swings into action to combat the atrocity- but in our “war on terror” we allow terrorists the freedom to use TV, and the internet to deliver threats, send images of hostages facing execution, etc.

We are working to spread freedom across the globe, but our own 18-20 year old adults can not legally drink a beer. No one is asking for them to be able to drink and drive, or to abuse alcohol, only to legally and responsibly use alcohol. They shouldn’t be treated as second class citizens.

A system that creates vulnerability and allows social security numbers to be used in cases of identity theft, and then warns citizens to somehow protect themselves from I.D. theft.

Americans are winners. We expect a high standard.
