War on Terror:

Mixed messages-

If there is a military solution- why no draft?

If foreign troops came to your neighborhood and set up some sort of martial law scenario- would you be hostile towards them?

If we are really out to stop another 911- why is the goal for federal agents at US ports of entry to stop just 30% of terrorists or other illegal traffic?

30%

Recent video of GAO official explaining the 30% goal at a public forum: http://tinyurl.com/kulnoh

We see Homeland Security gunboats escorting ferries on Puget Sound. We also see that The Washington State Patrol uses dogs to check vehicles prior to loading- on some ferry runs- on some days.

Walk-on passengers are not screened on any run at any time.

http://tinyurl.com/ya49lyz

Are the terrorism recruits described in the article US citizens?

If so, asking about citizenship at US border crossings or at internal, suspicionless Homeland Security checkpoints and roadblocks accomplishes what?

Success in the "War on Terror" seems to have come more from investigative law enforcement work and less from military operations overseas.

Women on Submarines:

Yes, women serve admirably in the wartime military.

Yes, there are women who can do anything a man can do.
While we are taking a look at modernizing policy, we should at least ask why- in Oct, 2009- 18 year old men register for the draft and women opt out.

Much talk about the "Glass Ceiling" in our last presidential primary election- maybe it is time to put equality into action- or release all citizens from any obligation to register for the draft.

The federal government failed to keep us safe on September 11th, 2001. Eight years later, it turns out that federal agents at US ports of entry only attempt to interdict 30% of illegal activity crossing through them.

“Land of the Free” - Another Update

Our culture is very much about symbolism and appearances-

We talk big about freedom. We have the biggest baddest military in the world- ready to kick ass at any time, it’s 2009 and we are waiting for government permission to salute the flag?

Can I salute with my middle finger?

I’d be much more inclined to salute if the federal government had any credibility and if it held the door open for responsible adults to actually take delivery on these freedoms we hear so much about.

Memorial Day 2009-

Having an honest understanding of why we send "The Troops" to far away places may be one way to pay respect to veterans.

Our popular culture believes- and it will be repeated many times this weekend- "The Troops are fighting to protect our Rights and Freedoms."

The US Armed Forces operate as an instrument of US foreign policy. Foreign Policy goals & objectives may, or may not have anything to do with the individual rights and freedoms of American citizens.

In some cases, the US Armed Forces protect our physical security. Freedom may be a different thing.

Welcome Home Troops

Memorial Day-

Still more than 2 weeks away and here is a letter that reminds us of the meaning of this important day.

The letter writer and several of those who have commented have made mention of the troops “fighting for our freedom.”

One person wrote: “...spend this Memorial Day honoring those who have defended your right to have an opinion on this matter.”

Like we are some kind of mindless drones dependent on someone in a military uniform to enable us to think or to have an opinion.

My imaginary middle finger is raised high.

One or two of the comments remind us not to have a party or a BBQ to observe the occasion. At least one person said we should not spend money at retail events or Memorial Day “Sales.”

If the troops were lost “fighting for our freedom”, maybe part of that freedom is not to conform to some scripted plan for the day.

Maybe some of those who were sent to far away places and never came back would have enjoyed celebrating freedom with a BBQ, plenty of beer and even loud music.

Maybe the freedom to think is what they fought for.

Maybe some of those lost in battle would question the idea that they were fighting for freedom? Some might believe that, in some cases, the US Armed Forces protect our physical security, but that freedom may be a different thing.

Some might believe that part of honoring the troops is to have an honest understanding of why we send them off to far away places.

Some might believe that The Armed Forces operate as an instrument of US foreign policy, and that Foreign Policy goals & objectives may, or may not have anything to do with the individual rights and freedoms of American citizens.

Some might believe that if it is important to honor those who have been lost in battle, maybe it should be done throughout the year, not just on a federal holiday or one special day on the calendar. No guilt trip required.

Oath Keepers-

How does a former military person have authority or opportunity to act on an oath any more than someone who has never served in uniform?

I like the idea of oath keepers, but I tend to object to dividing people up into groups and assigning a value to each group. Why not just encourage all Americans to stand up for what is right?

Concealed carry permits are now void on National Parks lands. Are there Oath Keepers in federal law enforcement, Park Rangers, etc. that will side with citizens on this?

Our popular culture believes “The Troops are fighting to protect our Rights and Freedoms” Should we contact the Joint Chiefs of Staff if we want our concealed carry permit to be honored on National Parks lands?

The federal government- US Border Patrol- conducts internal, suspicionless checkpoints and roadblocks where all motorists and bus passengers are treated as guilty until proven innocent- required to stop and explain themselves to federal agents- even though they are not crossing the border.
Are these situations going to be addressed by people in the military?

When is the last time we sent “The Troops” anywhere to defend the constitution?

Years into the “war on terror”- third world operators taunt and pester us.

Our major political parties take turns in power, but a pro war/anti freedom agenda still seems to remain in place.

Last summer, near the Hood Canal Bridge, a legal Washington State medical marijuana user- with a legal amount of medical marijuana- was cited by the US Border Patrol at a checkpoint/roadblock (charges against Mr Dixon dropped after he sweated hiring a lawyer- did so - and went to court).

Charges were dropped because the US Attorney's Office did not want to prosecute small time drug cases.

The US Border Patrol- on Feb 25th, 2009- at a public forum in Port Townsend- was asked: Since the US Attorney made a statement last summer saying they do not want to prosecute cases involving small amounts of marijuana- what will happen to the next legal medical marijuana user found with a legal amount of medical marijuana at a checkpoint?

The US Border Patrol stated that small quantities of marijuana will be referred to "state and local" authorities- truly confusing in the case of medical marijuana- legal in Washington State.

Your concealed carry permit is void on National Parks lands.

If we want to have our concealed carry permit honored on National Parks lands- should we tell the Joint Chiefs of Staff?

The Washington State constitution protects gun ownership. Washington is a concealed carry permit state.

In recent years, the US federal government has prohibited concealed carry on National Parks lands. Washington State concealed carry permits have become void when one crossed into a National Park within the State of Washington.

Recently we have heard of a federal rule change in this area.

As of this morning, (2/19/09) the North Cascades National Park web page says guns are still illegal there.

Confusing? So much for a responsible person trying to eliminate guesswork and play by the rules. Updating a web page is as easy as sending an e-mail- not so for the federal government.

Has anyone been able to find info about concealed carry rules on any National Park website? I have not.

Awarding Economic Recovery Jobs

Lunch Lady-

My old school district is working to trim the budget. Some of the people that may be impacted are food services workers.

I worked as a "lunch lady" at NKSD for 3 1/2 years. Great people to work with- they had their heart in the right place- they cared about the kids. They knew how to hustle.

We worked part time- average shift about 4 hours. We reported to work less than half the days in a calendar year (171). Unlike traditional food services jobs- we never worked nights, weekends or holidays. We were never on-call, etc. In many cases our job was to unpack and warm up frozen corn dogs, hot pockets, burritos, etc.

My dental plan was better as a lunch lady than it was after 20 years in the Marines.

We were in a union with full time- year round- workers who did things like get up on the roof in bad weather and work on electrical or ventilation equipment. The union always wanted better pay and benefits. The school district said they didn't have any more money. As time went on some were put on split shifts. Lunchtime dishwasher jobs were eliminated. A good part time job came to an end.

If I wanted better pay and benefits I wouldn't have taken a part time job with summers off, Christmas vacation, spring break, multiple long weekends, etc.

Happy Martin Luther King Day.

Know that Washington State Liquor Stores may have last call as early as 7:00 PM on Saturday January 17th. Your next opportunity to legally buy a bottle will be sometime on Tuesday of next week.

What's up with not being able to buy a bottle on solemn holidays like July 4th, New years, Labor Day, Columbus Day, etc?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Don't Blame Governor Gregoire for Atheist Sign at the Washington State Capitol

Maybe next year can be the start of a new tradition. A church with enough physical space could host displays from various religions on their property. This event could migrate around to a different place of worship each year- much like different countries hosting the olympic games. The public could be invited to visit the site where the displays are hosted to learn about various religions. This could be kind of like a "county fair" of different faiths. This would not be seen as controversial by those who object to displays at the airport or the capitol. The host church could decide how inclusive they want to be and make their own call on which displays or messages to accept or reject.

Arctic Blast-

My old school district (of recent note for their "everyone is a hero" concert) sent a get ready for winter e-mail yesterday.

Text of school district message

I could not help but feel a little sad as I reflected on the generations of parents who raised families without the benefit of the internet and e-mail alerts from local school districts Re: December storms.

Americans were once a hardy people.

It is clear that Dads are no longer in charge of families. The WWII generation is mostly gone now.

Today- almost 2009- we are given special instructions on how to find out if school is canceled: "local TV and radio stations will tell you if our school district is running on schedule."

Scarce budget resources have been set aside this year to send out a "Wake Up Call" to families with school age children:

Whatever happened to individual responsibility-

"You will get a phone call from us if school is delayed or cancelled.
Beginning this year, we will use our district’s new telephone notification system to let you know if schools are running two hours late, or if they are closed for the day. All parents and staff members will receive a telephone call at approximately 5:30 a.m. to let you know the status. We use the same language on the phone, on the website and on television, to help you know exactly what is happening. If you don’t answer the phone, we will leave the message on your answering machine. Spanish speaking families will get the message in Spanish. Here is what we will say, and what it means.

·         Schools closed - All schools will be closed for one day only. All meetings, field trips, after school activities will be canceled for the day unless otherwise announced.

·         Late start - Bus schedules and schools will begin two hours late. Students will be dismissed at the regular time unless there is a specific announcement regarding early dismissal. Usually we also cancel morning pre-school and kindergarten, listen for this information. No breakfast will be served on a two-hour delay schedule.

·         No out of district transportation - There will be no transportation to any programs outside our district for any students.

·         If there is NO announcement, schools are operating on a normal schedule."

Get with the program people- and wait for further instructions.

Atheist display in Olympia-

People are not expected to agree on religion- even within a single faith, many varieties of churches may exist.

Some say the government should not involve itself in these matters.

Individual liberty is alive and well in some parts of our society, in other areas personal choices and beliefs are on hold until validated by the will of the voters- smoking in private clubs, medical marijuana, “dry counties”, gay marriage, 18 year old adults using (not abusing) alcohol, etc.

Our religious freedom should serve as a model for individual liberty in general. We had a “top two” primary in Washington State a while back. Re: religious freedom- we are not about to vote to make people conform to a “one size fits all” mandate or limit worship to a “top two” or 3 most popular faiths. Other forms of individual liberty- we’re not too sure about.

Peaceable, responsible, adult choices should be left to individuals to make.

Washington State's projected budget deficit: $5.1 billion

The government version of retail management in Washington State prevents us from buying a bottle of booze at Safeway, Costco, Tom’s liquor, etc. Most State operated stores are closed on Sundays and holidays- some feature a 7 PM closing time on Saturdays.
