One way to deal with a crazed, armed intruder-
If it makes sense to allow the concealed carry of handguns, (most states do) why have a checkerboard pattern of jurisdictions (National Parks) and locations within a state where it is not legal to carry a gun?
The Washington State constitution protects gun ownership. Washington is a concealed carry permit state.
In recent years, the US federal government has prohibited concealed carry on National Parks lands. Washington State concealed carry permits become void when one crosses into a National Park within the State of Washington- until Feb 2010.
Think the federal government will try to keep confusion to a minimum about the Feb 2010 rule change? Think they will remind us they way they did about the switchover from rabbit ear TV, or seat-belt laws, or drunk driving laws?
Here in the “Land of the Free” people can become very guarded about freedom beyond their own personal choices. A common question is “Why would anyone need...”
Citizens are under no obligation to explain a “need” to own a firearm any more than they must explain a need to go water-skiing, rebuild an old car and take it to the racetrack on weekends, or attend services at their chosen place of worship once a week, or more often, or never at all.
For many people, a firearm is like the spare tire in the car, a first aid kit, or a fire extinguisher- hope you never need to use them.
All of this does not change as we cross through a checkerboard pattern of jurisdictions and boundaries here in our home state and find ourselves on National Parks lands- where the federal government says your concealed carry permit is void. Welcome home troops.
This is a use vs. abuse issue. Peaceable, responsible adult choices should be left to individuals to make.
Just like a driver’s license, why isn’t a concealed carry permit issued in one state, honored in the other 49? One reason- the politicians of any given state represent the interests of their own residents, not residents of other states who are traveling through. Politicians may also not be about political leadership- standing up for what is right- some may be in a reactive mode, waiting to see if pressure develops on an issue, waiting to see what the majority wants. Is freedom really about the will of the majority?
Here at home- if an intruder was attempting to do harm to the cats, I would want to be able to send rounds downrange.
When the terrorists come to get us, it might be a good thing to be able to resist.
