At the turn of the 20th century the Castrogiovannis emigrated from Contessa Entellina, Sicily. After living for a time in Houston, Texas, the Castrogiovanni family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. Giacomo Castrogiovanni was a grocer who bought stores around New Orleans. The grocery on Tulane Avenue was one such store. The store was originally turned over to Giacomo’s son, Johnny. Johnny did not care much for the grocery business and, in the early 1920’s, eventually sold the store to his brother Nick for seven dollars and a pocketful of change. Nick’s emerged from the Great Depression as, not only a grocery, but also a deli, bar, beer garden and wine store. Everything except the bar was lost in the hurricanes of the 1960’s. Mr. Nick passed away in 1979, and his wife, Miss Dora, kept the “store” operating. The Castrogiovanni family continued to operate the business after Dora’s passing in 1990. The business had obviously gone through many changes over the years, but Hurricane Katrina was a future-altering event for the long-established family business. The family is determined that the business will return to its original location at 2400 Tulane Avenue before the end of 2008.
