Evangelism and Witness in Modern and Postmodern Contexts
Evangelism and Witness in Modern and Postmodern Contexts
This contextualization course focuses on evangelism as a drama, a narrative account that has a beginning, a middle and an end. In the first scene, there is a confrontation, struggle and combat between two powerful, but unequal, beings with the ETERNAL DESTINY OF HUMANKIND AT STAKE. In the second scene, there is an ANNOUNCER who is to make the outcome of that battle available, credible, significant and PRESENT TENSE to those who were not there and who saw nothing. In the third scene, after the announcer has spoken and the listener has heard, the listener is invited to respond to this new situation, letting the newly announced reality reshape life in new ways YET the reception and appropriation of that message cannot be predicted -- some will believe the message while others will reject the message and walk away in unbelief.
The most obvious constituency for evangelism and witness in our pluralistic age is the OUTSIDER who lives by other narrative identities than a Christian one. A second constituency are former INSIDERS, those who have grown careless and weary about the Christian faith, and who must be summoned from amnesia to a living and saving memory.
