LEPTOGENYS
These predatory ants construct nests under loose soil, in rotting logs and under tree bases. Several species of this group lead a nomadic lifestyle, wherein they use their nests for a relatively short duration before heading out to find and establish a new nesting site. They get their name ‘Leptogenys’ owing to their powerful ‘slender jaws’. They are also equipped with a sharp sting. Some species, especially L. processionallis, prefer to feed on termites. These ants are known from the tropics and subtropical regions throughout the world. Over 236 species and subspecies are known in the world. Ants of this genus are classified as Specialist Predators.
