Myrmecina

Very little is known about ants of this genus. They are distributed throughout Europe, Asia & Australia with a few species known in Central and North America. About 34 species are known from this genus (Antbase). At least two species are known to be specialist predators on oribatid mites. The species featured below, M. urbanii is found in Karnataka and Kerala and happens to be just one of the four species of this genus known in India, Quite distinct is their long propodeal spines which are curved at the tip. These ants establish terrestrial nests under leaf litter.
