Opisthopsis
Opisthopsis is a genus full of eye-catching ants! They go by the common name ‘strobe ants’. These are extremely visual ants; anybody who has attempted to catch one of these can vouch for this. They run quite rapidly, often make unnerving jerky motions. They nest either in soil or on trees. The striking feature of this ants is most certainly their large eyes and the location of it. Unlike in most ants their eyes are positioned far behind on their head, perhaps enabling these ants to have a really large field of vision. They are locally abundant and known from Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Australia.
