RHYTIDOPONERA

Ants of this group are solitary foragers but cooperate during prey retrieval. Just over a 100 species are known from this genus (Australian Ants Online). They occupy diverse habitats ranging from rain forests, eucalyptus woodlands and semi arid deserts. These ants are classified as Opportunistic species and they scavenge on a variety of arthropods and feed on seeds. Presence of gamergates is known in R. metallica. Nests are constructed in soil, often under rocks or at the base of tussocks (in semi-arid deserts).
