So, this year had made clear the Math Club has serious problems with its overall mission over the past 4 years. Maybe this is why It completely collapsed a couple times. Anyway, math club needs a shiny new purpose, with an awesome new (actually old) name: Purdue Univeristy Mathematics Society (PUMaS)
Prior to this year, the primary focus of PUMaS was in to prepare students to attend the the Spring meeting of the Indiana section of the MAA, and participate in the Indiana Collegiate Mathematics Competition (ICMC).
In all honesty, this is a pretty lame reason for an organization to exist. We’ve shown this year that all we need to do to be victorious in this competition is convince our three best undergraduates to spend a weekend doing math and eating on the department. Recruitment is the issue, not training.
Instead PUMaS should serve a much broader and meaningful purpose, to establish a community amoung undergraduate mathematics majors, that allows them access to upperclassmen, graduate students, and faculty for the purposes of mentoring, fellowship, research.
This is a type of community that naturally arises among Purdue Graduate students, possibly from the close proximity of so many like minded people. For undergraduates, however, this does not come so easily.
Secondarily, PUMaS should work to spread awareness of, and excitement for mathematics throughout the Purdue Campus, i.e., B’Euler Up!
This has been Jamie’s irrelevant mission statement for math club.
