salt marsh adventures

into the salt marsh we go- the two hour adventure begins!  Along the tidal waters surrounding Folly Island, a diverse and abundant ecosystem unfolds right before our eyes.  Wildlife abounds everywhere.  Bottle nose dolphin jump and play almost within reach.   An osprey flies overhead.  Egrets and herons wade in search of a meal.

As we round the corner and enter Lighthouse Inlet, the majestic Morris Island Lighthouse stands before us.  Moving seaward to the mouth of the inlet, we imagine a scene played out at this very location during the US Civil War.

Moving behind Morris Island into Clark sound, we pass through “Government Cut”.  Soon we find ourselves adjacent to Cummings Point.  Fort Sumter stands just ahead, guarding Charleston Harbor’s entrance.

Fort Johnson fired upon this  fortress, sparking the War Between the States.

Across the harbor stands Fort Moultrie, whose Revolutionary War heroics led to our independence from Great Britain.  Fort Moultrie’s palmetto tree barricade saved the fort and inspired our

State Symbol.
