The tumescent technique is a method of liposuction that can reduce post operative swelling, bruising, and pain.  Blood loss is minimized during tumescent liposuction.  This technique involves injecting areas of excess fat with an anesthetic solution before the liposuction is performed.  The liquid causes the pockets of fat to become swollen or tumesced.  The expanded pockets of fat allow the cannula to travel smoothly beneath the skin as fat is removed.
