Non invasive laser lipolysis is the application of a low level or cold laser (no thermal effect on tissue). The application of this laser has been shown through extensive research to liquify fat within the adipocyte (fat cell). Following six minutes of low level laser exposure, the round grape like adipocytes are completely liquified.
The low level energy emitted by this laser causes a transitory pore in the cell membrane to open, allowing the liquified fat to leave the cell and accumulate in the interstitial space around the cells. There is no damage to the cell membrane since fat is expelled through this transitory pore. Once the fat is in the interstitial space, it is naturally cleared through the lymphatic system. The liquified fat is subsequently excreted without the negative side effects or downtime associated with more invasive procedures.
Recently the numerous benefits of low level laser therapy have become more prominent. Low level laser treatment has been used by cosmetic surgeons to emulsify adipose before liposuction with FDA approval since 2004. There are no known risks associated with low level laser treatment. This treatment is non invasive and uses a cold output laser. During treatment no discomfort will be present, the patient will not feel the laser, however the emitted light will be visible. In contrast to high power, high heat lasers that are used in various medical procedures, the low level laser used in this treatment has no thermal effect on tissue.
Dr. Wisler has performed a study using this low level laser to determine the safety and effectiveness of this treatment. Over a two week period participants noticed significant fat reduction and body contouring, without altering diet and exercise routines. During this study patients reported no adverse side effects.
