Meathead Films came about after David Underwood and Adam Mondon who had been filming around the Colchester area for some time, decided to join forces and attempt to put together a decent scene video for that area of Essex. They both had watched and loved the Ipswich scene videos such as ‘Tough Guys’ and ‘Kaboom’ and new that this kind of thing had to carry on within the East Anglian skate scene. So armed with two hi-8 video cameras and an edit suite in Dave’s house, they went about constructing what would become ‘Grow Up’. The whole process took about a year from start to finish and had a bit of help from another local lad ’Channon King’. Grow Up was then released in 1998 and got a good response with quite a few people getting to see it throughout the UK, not just East Anglia.

Straight off the back of Grow Up, both Dave and Adam started on the next project entitled ‘Ex-Rental’. This video was made a quicker process from other filmers offering to contribute off what they had seen from Grow Up. So from that they were able to get a good varied ‘Friends’ section together to go alongside full parts from Channon King, John Jagadowski, Sandy, Frank Stephens and the Hoax Skateshop Team. Ben Rodriguez also had a full part, which came as a surprise and a joy to everyone. Ben had been laying low for quite a while after getting quite a bit of magazine coverage, so Adam and Dave were stoked to get to film a Rodriguez part. The star of the show was Mr Barry Dimmock, who was a bit of a legend around Essex. He kindly agreed to introduce the skaters in his own charming way. Ex-Rental was premiered at the Colchester Institute in the summer of 1999 and received a warm welcome from many East Anglian Locals. Sadly Barry Dimmock could not make it because of previous commitments.

The third film in the Meathead Trilogy was the ‘Hoax Promo’. It was released in 2000 and came about after talks with the owner of Hoax (Lee Minter) to try and produce a shop video that had the feel of a scene vid with some local friends/skaters thrown in. So with rather short timescale, Dave and Adam set about creating the Hoax promo. It was split into three sections (Ipswich, Colchester, Norwich) for the shops that were scattered around East Anglia. This time the Edit would take place at Dave’s University halls in London. For one week they fitted into a cramped box of a room with hi-8 tapes all around and went about finishing the video. There was a very varied selection of shop riders that appeared in the Promo and it the curtains were provided by Norfolk’s own Chewy Cannon. This was one of the first times Chewy was seen on video before becoming the well known Skateboarder he is today.

Within the time that Adam and Dave were producing videos under the Meathead moniker a number of collaborations were made including the first Unabomber Promo under the watchful eye of Ipswich lad Frank Stephens.
Now it’s 2008 and Meathead Films has been reborn in the form of this here Anthology and also with the new film ‘Scene It’. After collecting all the old hi-8 tapes from various sources, Adam was able to edit up a 20 minute film consisting of all unused footage from many well known faces of East Anglian skateboarding that were within the Meathead era.

Hope you enjoy the Anthology.
