THE ACADEMY
                        OF THE SOUTH SIDEHome.html

Founded in 2005, The Academy of the South Side provides year-round affordable, high quality instruction in painting and drawing through classes, workshops, open model sessions and artist residencies for students of all ages and skill levels.  Housed in a beautiful studio in the basement of the historic St. Michael’s school building, The Academy aims to not only educate but to inspire.  Beginners and professionals alike develop and hone their skills through single classes or more concentrated study, building on a foundation of studio practice focusing on painting and drawing the human form from life.

In addition to being an educational resource, The Academy also brings unique art events and exhibitions to the Pittsburgh community.  Citywide Salon is our yearly public art show, which began in 2008 as part of the Pittsburgh 250 celebration, and showcases paintings by local artists in high traffic bus shelters throughout the city.  In the fall of 2009, we put on a gallery show called Harvest, featuring the work of 8 local artists in a rented storefront in conjunction with Penn Ave Arts Initiative's First Friday gallery crawl.  Based off that show's success, we plan to expand to hold impromptu gallery shows to coincide with other local gallery crawls, giving artists an opportunity to reach a large audience in a non-traditional gallery setting.
