Fairbanks rolled out their digital learning initiative on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at North Pole Middle School. The agenda included introductions and brief words from Superintendent Dr. Ann Shortt, Senator Gene Therriault, school board member Sue Hull, project teachers Jeff Jacobson and Terry Solomon, and Bob Whicker from Apple Computer.
Fairbanks district IT Director Jim Cobb then gave overviews of MacBook features and how Internet access from home will be filtered through the district system. Detective Payton Merideth of the Fairbanks Police Department discussed Internet safety, and Principal Ernie Manzie outlined ground rules for student use of the laptops.
Once the preliminaries were over, the laptops were handed out to the students. All over the school commons area small islands of families gathered, each with a 6th grade student showing moms, dads, brothers and sisters some of the projects they had accomplished during the school day.
