Alaska teacher and software developer Alan Degener recently completed two applications for use by educators. QuickieQ is a web-based on-the-fly student response system. goCloudware is an interactive site designed to help educators discover and review a variety of web-based instructional applications.
Student Produces Tech Support Podcasts
A student participating in CDL at Southeast Island school district has produced a series of podcasts designed to provide technical support to his fellow students. The podcasts give pointers on how to accomplish basic tasks all students using laptops in the district are expected to know, including publishing a website or calendar online and accessing the school server.

The World Is Flat - Book Review by Angus King
Angus King served as governor of Maine from 1995-2003. He is credited with leading the creation of the Maine Learning Technology Initiative in 2002, which provided every 7th and 8th grader in the state with a laptop computer. In this audio podcast Mr. King gives his perspective on Thomas Friedman’s book, The World is Flat, and how education needs to prepare students for the global economy.

Apple has unveiled a new catalog of professional development courses for Alaska school districts, and Sally Eberhart is named state Apple PD Team Leader.
New CDL Professional Development Website Launched
The Consortium for Digital Learning, in conjunction with The Chariot Group, is proud to announce the launch of a new website featuring a comprehensive menu of professional development services designed for CDL districts.
2011 CDL Progress Report: “We’ve made the shift. There’s no going back”
To evaluate the benefits and challenges of the CDL 1-to-1 initiative since its launch in 2006, AASB commissioned Dr. Jason Ohler to conduct in-depth interviews with key program participants and produce a project summary report. The new report also features profiles of CDL teachers from three regions of the state—Western, Southeast and Anchorage—to provide a classroom-level perspective before and after digital learning was introduced to their schools.
Study: Laptop use in curriculum results in greater writing achievement
Education Commissioner Susan Gendron and Maine Gov. John Baldacci hailed the results of a study that offers, for the first time, quantifiable data showing that the use of laptops in classrooms improves learning.
