DEAR DIARY

A paperless book by Yelena Gluzman

in which the book is written directly

onto the consciousness of its reader.

     ~

To read “Dear Diary”:

1

Put on a full-body rabbit suit.

(The one pictured here was created by Urara Tsuchiya).

In one hand, hold a small tape recorder.

Sit quietly in a bookshop or library.

2

Allow passersby, browsing at the bookshop,

to sit on your lap and whisper any diary entry they like.

When anyone speaks to you, record it on the tape.

Do this until the tape is full.

3

Take off the head of the rabbit suit, rewind the tape, and,

using headphones, listen to the entire recording.

You have just read Dear Diary.

(Rewind the tape again. The next reader will use the same one, recording over the tape you just heard. In this way, each book can be read only once, by one reader.)

“Dear Diary” was available at Artbooks, the bookshop at PS1 Museum, New York, in March 2010. It was published by the Ugly Duckling Presse Paperless Books Dept., and is available in limited, site-specific editions at bookstores and libraries. Please contact the publisher (below) for more information.

*PAPERLESS BOOKS (at ugly duckling presse)

To challenge the notion that a book is an inviolable body sprung forth from a singular author, unaffected by its multiplication, distribution, and interpretation by readers dispersed in space and time, the Paperless Book Department (PBD) at Ugly Duckling Presse (UDP) seeks to publish and distribute books which call into question their own stability. The Paperless Book Department, developed by Yelena Gluzman, hopes that such projects can result in novel ways of writing, reading, and distributing books.

The PBD accepts paperless book proposals of all kinds. Please contact paperless@uglyducklingpresse.org.
