January 5, 2008

Hi, everyone!

We were delighted with the outcome of our first “Cultural Camp 2007” and the out pouring of love and compassion for the orphans of Ukraine!  Thank you for signing up to maintain a Pen Pal relationship with a special person in Ukraine!

The 17 children that came to visit us in December are back at their orphanages.  13 of the orphans came from Special School-Internat and the remaining the 4 came from Regional School-Internat.  The addresses for both orphanages are below.  We have typed out the addresses in  different sizes to print out and tape to envelopes and boxes.  We recommend putting both the Russian and English address on letters and packages.

We are excited to start our new Pen Pal letter writing with everyone’s help.  It is so important for us all to take time to write letters to these orphan children, they look forward to it!  We have several translators lined up to help with the process.  Since we are in our infancy stages of this, please bare with us as we figure out the best way to get letters to the orphans.  Another option is to use a translation website – there are several good ones out there – we have one listed below.

Translation Website -    http://translation2.paralink.com/

Our recommendation is to translate English to Russian and then do a check by translating the Russian BACK into English.  You may have to play with the wording to capture the meaning.

As far as letter content, we have some basic guide lines we ask of you. Please feel free to write as many letters as you would like, but we encourage 1 time a month at a minimum. Do not ask extreme personal questions to the children in your letters!  Do not talk about adoption.  (if you have an appointment date already, then you are already at a point with  children where you can write about your upcoming adoption.)  for anyone else, there are too many variables that can occur before this time and we need to avoid causing the orphan children to experience disappointment and heartache that could possibly happen should paperwork or direction change regarding adoption of a child.  Find out about the children, ask questions that require answers, find out about their friends, their dreams, their school work, their hobbies, etc.  Please ask as many questions as you can about their favorite color, favorite season, favorite food, favorite activity, what their normal day is like, etc.  Write about your favorite things, your everyday life, your dreams and aspirations, your relationship with God, etc.  Please avoid questions that might bring our painful memories from the past.  Let us know if you have questions.

As for the Birthday gift/care packages, from our past experience the below items seem to work well, but please feel free to find out the children’s interest and ask what they may like.   Also, keep in mind that shipping to Ukraine is rather expensive.  The last box we sent which weighed 4 #’s and cost about $30.00 to ship.  A lot of times the shipping will cost more than the contents.  Sending padded envelopes with small items works well too.

1.stationary/pens/stickers/envelopes/office supplies

2.toiletries

3.clothing (t-shirts, socks, slippers etc)

4.candy that does not melt

5.books – how to learn English – we have sent 1-3rd grade levels

6.small toys/puzzles

7.pictures of Colorado –they love family pictures and scenic pictures

If you have any questions about the letters/packages, please let us know.  We really appreciate all of you helping with our Outreach!  We want to let the children in Ukraine know that we care for them and that will bring them HOPE in the world!
