Justice and Faith

We are often asked why a faith group should get involved in matters of social justice and activism. After all, shouldn’t religion remain a “private” matter- not something that gets entangled with politics?

We affirm the separation of church and state and reject any attempts to conflate faith with partisan politics.

But we also believe that Jesus did not teach a purely personal or private faith. Rather, he cared about justice, preaching good news to the poor, liberation to the enslaved, sight to the blind, and freedom for the oppressed (Luke 4:18).

The story of the Bible is a story of justice. From the stories of Creation in Genesis, where the first woman and man are told to care for the earth and each other, to the visions of Revelation, where nations and rulers are judged for their deeds, the Jewish and Christian scriptures continually reveal to us that God is a god who cares about humanity and how we act toward one another.

And ever since the Jewish prophets spoke against the ruling authorities for their mistreatment of the marginalized and oppressed, the role of faith in shaping activist movements cannot be denied: from the early abolitionists to the civil rights movements led by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and others; from the struggle for workers’ rights in the early 1900’s to the struggle for LGBT equality today, people of faith have not only been active participants but movers and shapers in the continual march toward a more just world.

Thus, FEAST affirms that our faith as Christians cannot be constrained to worship on Sundays and the occasional prayer before meals. Rather, we should be doing the things Jesus did, and caring about the things Jesus cared about.

Thus, we dedicate ourselves living our faith incarnationally and missionally, standing with those marginalized by society, working for peace in our world, calling our society and our government to be accountable, and struggling for justice wherever and whenever there is injustice in our world.
