J.R. Hatmaker
Jerry “Roger” Hatmaker has been a great help to me with this project. He provides a large part of the narrative in my film and has shared photos and home movies from his younger days in coalwood.
(L-R) Jack Likens, J.R. Hatmaker and David Goad
(Bluefield, WV, Oct. 2, 2008)
There are no greater supporters of the town of Coalwood than these three former Coalwood residents. They’ve helped me with my project by letting me use their photos and movies. Having these guys behind me has meant the world to me. It’s an honor to be able to say they’re my friends.
Jerry’s book, The Coalwood Misfits, is a humorous memoir of growing up in Coalwood told through the voice of Jerry’s brother, Bobby, whose nickname was “Satan”.
This book is the first in the Clearfork Series. Read it and you’ll want to get the others.

J.R.’s current project is a series of four books (with Jack Likens) about Coalwood and Caretta during the time they lived there, from the ‘40s to the ‘60s.
They have a lot of great photos -- many of them have never been seen before.
