my growing interests in photography and international travel were fostered through my recent experiences in the world of sailing. a sailor? from iowa? yes, it’s true. i grew up in marshalltown and later attended the university of iowa. as i was growing up, the opportunities to learn the sport of sailing were certainly few and far between. after graduating, however, i lived and worked in the caribbean between 2001 and 2002. it was in the virgin islands where i was introduced to the sport and lifestyle of sailing.
today, it has been nearly two years since my brother and I completed our bid to circumnavigate the earth in his cruising sailboat, Grace. beginning in january of 2005, Grace safely carried the two of us across 24,000 miles of the world’s wild oceans and around the globe in less than 14 months. the travel adventure provided me with countless memories and the opportunity to meet many new friends from all over the world. we saw some of the earth’s most beautiful, remote and exotic places: the galapagos, marquesas, tahiti, tonga, fiji, australia, south africa, and many more. i am not sure where my passion for photography will carry me next, but i’ll always remember the sailing trip that sparked my enthusiasm behind the camera lens.
