They really got going once we handed them all drum sticks and let them pound away on their desks!

Not sure the teachers were so thrilled about this:)

Of course touch is another great way for deaf and hard of hearing kids (some of them have partial hearing) to experience musical instruments.

Chris would show them a cymbal and let them hit it with a drum stick.  They placed their hands near or on the cymbal to feel the vibrations.

Anyway, we had a great time and it seemed like they did as well!

If you ever get a chance to make music with some deaf kids, I highly recommend it!

See the balloons?  The kids hold those close to the instrument being played.  The balloon vibrates with the music and they can feel the rhythms.

You can try this yourself.  You’ll notice that especially the low (bass) frequencies make the balloons really vibrate.  Pretty cool, huh?

Same with the guitar- they put their hands on the wood or on the strings to feel the vibrations while I played.

(Yes, you’re reading that right)
