Dreaming While I’m Awake

Dreaming While I’m Awake

In 1972 our daughter was born and tremendous amounts of creative energy became focused on raising her. Through all of that I wrote - fiction and non-fiction (one published book: Generations of Denial, 1970). I did photography (I turned a closet into a darkroom), learned to weave and spin and dye yarn, crocheted and knitted and sewed. And I paid a lot of attention to my (night-time) dreams. In the 80s I received an M.A. in Human Values, a lay degree from a theological school, and I continued my work with dreams, both individually and with groups.
It was only in the mid-90s that I found art. It has changed my life. After a few years of making art I’m now finding what interests me most is how we find authentic creative energies in ourselves, and how we communicate that information from the deep unconscious.
Dreaming While I’m Awake...
We’re all experts at creating. We “create” every night when we dream (whether we remember the dreams or not), in elaborate (usually surreal) detail. We are the actors, director, author, editor, and Trickster, all in one package.
How do we simultaneously walk in the dream world and in the waking world, bringing back the images to share with others? How can we create a bridge and how do we maintain it?
In the deep unconscious we find not only our personal images, but our transpersonal, archetypal energies as well. When we do our own work, we contribute to the evolution of the species.

When I was 54 I decided to give myself a birthday present. I decided to find out if I could make art.
The answer is yes, but more importantly I discovered that it isn’t half as mysterious a process as I’d imagined.
Everyone can do it. Indeed everyone DOES do it every night in dreams.
