get to know me
Julie Marateck is one of those rare types who takes the initiative and the time to seek out people she considers worthy, inspiring, and valuable. She must see things in ourselves we don't, because she does not settle for the superficial or the mundane on any level. She has a drive, a curiosity, and an instinct to know more and to walk her own path a little further each day. When she does, many will be all the wiser to follow her along the way.

I know of very few people who are able to capture the heart and spirit of an event or a location the way Julie does through her photography. She truly pours her soul into her work...and that dedication is reflected in her magnificent photographs. Perhaps more importantly, she is a warm and wonderful human being, and I consider myself fortunate indeed to be able to call her my friend.

I was immediately drawn to Zen Dreaming photograph for many reasons. Here are more than a few. I purchased this photograph because it gave me a feeling of tranquility, serenity and peace. I've always had a love of photography and enjoy taking pictures myself. This photo looks like something I would love to have seen with my own eyes, photographed the scene and placed in my own home. I have it in the breakfast nook in my condo. It is so nice to look up at it in the morning or anytime and escape into it. The black and white looks so inviting with the back drop of the reddish brown exposed brick wall it hangs on.
It really spoke to me because even though it's a black and white print, the contrast is striking. And the areas that are in focus are so crisp and clear you can virtually feel the arid heat engulfing the cactus in the center and the other growing things surrounding it. The areas that are out of focus give this snapshot of the desert, for the lack of a better word, a "dreamy" softness that soothes the scene. I let my imagination run wild imagining in color the sun baking the ground, the green vegetation reaching up to the sky, the little living creatures weaving in and out of the cactus and other vegetation searching for shade, or food. The entire image puts me in mind of the locations in old westerns from the Black and White film era of old hollywood which I've always been a fan of. I could go on. But I think you get the "picture." I certainly did.

I'm not a "cat person", I have two dogs and have never been particularly fond of cats as pets. So there's nothing about "cute cats" that appeals to me in this picture. Instead, I think of cats as kind of sinewy and sexy. And that's the impression I have of the photograph Cats In Window which I purchased in ‘07. The way the cats confront you directly by looking right at you kind of makes you catch your breath, the way you do when you make eye contact with someone who is attractive. Their pose is also amazing. They remind me of a scene from the original movie Dracula that takes place in the castle when Renfield has fainted, I believe. Three female vampires in long white gowns appear and undulate as they walk toward him with lustful, hungry looks in their eyes. Not scary, just soulful and very interested.

I have always been impressed with Julie’s ability to lead, connect with people on a human level and always be grateful for feedback. Julie strives to make a positive difference in the world and that expression comes out through the work she creates.

Julie radiates natural leadership ability and she is one of those rare people who openly asks, "Why not" to life. I learned a great deal from her during our time together as Co-Producers for V-Day. I observed Julie navigate confidently through various types of personalities involved in implementing V-Day Decatur. I was most impressed with her follow through and natural ability to bring people on board for the cause.

Top 5 to Thrive
An Interview with Artist & Alumni Juliet Marateck ’03

1. See the glass as half full: You must only surround yourself with people who are not skeptical of you living your dream.
2. Make a life, not just a living: I am probably on a 20-year journey toward being what would be considered a “successful” artist. Learn to be patient and take every small step as a great accomplishment.
3. Seek wisdom: An ancient proverb says, “To know the road ahead, ask those coming back.” Don’t be afraid to contact people who’ve been successful doing whatever you’re passionate about and ask them for advice.
4. Believe in happy accidents: After camping out in Wyoming, I was throwing away my trash and just happened to have my camera with me. The photo above was taken on a complete whim when I saw these cats.
5. Take it with a grain of salt: Many people don’t show their art for fear of rejection, but being rejected is just part of the journey. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling was rejected by 12 publishers. Who is laughing now?
